Here Be Dragons

Interactive Generative Installation

Video

Excerpt from system output with reactive visuals by KLARA Janina Luckow

Concept

"Here be dragons"—phrase medieval cartographers inscribed on uncharted territories. This generative installation inhabits similar threshold: unexplored temporal space between concert pieces, pause typically filled with coughs, program rustling, anticipatory silence. The system activates automatically during intermissions, transforming dead time into living sonic territory.

Horror vacui—fear of emptiness. The work embodies compulsion to fill two voids: physical space where audience sits, and metaphorical emptiness between programmed works. It questions whether silence truly exists in contemporary listening contexts, or whether we've lost capacity for unmediated quiet.

Operating as autonomous agent responding to ambient sound—conversations, footsteps, chair scrapes, phone notifications—every acoustic event feeds generative engine, producing unpredictable sonic responses that never repeat. The installation requires no attention. Audience members can continue conversations, scroll phones, sit in contemplative silence, or attempt communication with system. Each behavior generates data; each data stream influences sonic output.
